Cooling Out From School: A Quantitative Analysis of Urban Youth Forgoing the GED for a High School Diploma

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

Researchers have exclusively focused on urban youth that dropout of high school without consideration to the various educational pathways that students pursue in-school and out-of-school contexts. This study makes a critical step in identifying characteristics of Black and Hispanic urban youth that return to high school for a diploma, and the impact of school and neighborhood characteristics, specifically cultural adaptation strategies that they employ while transitioning, in shaping whether they reach graduation. Findings of this research underscore the role of culture and social justice in educating at-risk students in urban schools.
