NYC Students identified in Temporary Housing and Their School Success

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

As is the case across the country, in NYC, the number of youth who are without stable housing is on the rise. The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of NYC students in various temporary housing (STH) types, their academic achievement, and supports for and barriers to their school success. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the researcher analyzes administrative data specific to students and the schools they attend and interviews school and shelter staff as well as families to understand STH educational experiences. This paper discusses the mobility trends of students and temporary housing as well as the reasons for the concentration of STH in certain schools. Findings underscore that temporary housing is more chronic than provisional.
