Children's Computational Manipulation of Found Images as a Generative Context for Mathematics and Computer Science Learning

Abstract

The creation and sharing of images such as sketches, photographs, and video are ubiquitous in children’s everyday lives and act as personally meaningful modes of communication and expression (e.g. Ito et al., 2010). To this end, we designed ViMAP Image Computation, which is a domain-general, open-ended, multi-agent-based visual programming and modeling environment for computing on images that children import into the environment. Use of the toolset engages children in epistemic and representational practices that are central to scientific and mathematical modeling. We report a study conducted with 4th grade students and investigate the relationship between their computational work and the concepts and practices in computer science and mathematics that they began developing.
