The purpose of this study was to use empirical data to provide a counter-narrative to common conclusions drawn from studies of African American achievement. This study sought to critically analyze trends in access, participation, and performance on Advanced Placement (AP) courses for African American female students. A descriptive analysis of participation trends and African American female performance was conducted. Results suggest a wide variation across content areas in participation and performance. The German language exam had the strongest relationship between participation and student performance. Additionally, conclusions and implications for educational praxis and research are provided.
