The Artist as Scholar-Practitioner: An Aesthetically Informed Hermeneutic Leadership Approach

Abstract

As leader developers seek to create meaningful learning experiences, aesthetic inquiry provides a methodology in which graduate students may self-examine their growth through reflective, aesthetic processes. This interactive session is proposed as a display of visual scholarship in the format of an art gallery. Within the gallery, participants will engage in dialogue with the artists to reveal the complexities, challenges, and insights of the transformational process of evolving as scholar-practitioner artists. Perspectives including student and professor reflections experienced within a doctoral seminar course demonstrate how an aesthetically-informed hermeneutic leadership approach (Woodward and Funk, 2010) may be used to explore effective and meaningful aesthetic inquiry as a reflective tool for self-assessment and the deep exploration of the self (Palmer, 2006).
