Daoism and Education: Understanding Equity as a Base for Lessons Through the Philosophy of Dewey

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

The paper will explore how Daoism can offer an alternative view of education with an ‘aim to advance justice.’ It will focus on two Daoist texts, the Daodejing and Zhuangzi, to define the character of equity in what the authors describe as the optimal interaction with one’s world, and how it is related to their idea of justice. It will then consider how equity in Daoism can be used as a base to outline lessons. Understanding and applying the Daoist ideas will be done through comparisons with John Dewey’s work.
