Re-Mediating School Cultures With Local Stakeholders: A Formative Intervention Study for Systemic Transformation at a Middle School

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

The proposed presentation highlights findings from Culturally Responsive Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Learning Labs, a statewide formative intervention study. We collaborated with school staff, parents, administrators, and community representatives to address minority students’ disproportionate representation in exclusionary school disciplinary procedures at an urban middle school. Findings suggest the Learning Lab has the potential to include historically marginalized families and students into decision-making activities and renovate school systems through praxis. Following the presentation, audience will be able to identify strategies to build meaningful, empowering relationships between educators and nondominant families and students and to renovate systemic practices to become more inclusive.
