Leadership Distribution as a Way to Improve School Effectiveness

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Swissotel, Floor: Lucerne Level, Lucerne I

Abstract

This research is to investigate the ways in which distributed leadership is perceived and practiced regarding its six variables (Woods, et.al, 2004) within four core leadership functions in schools (Leithwood, et. al., 2006). Specifically, this study is guided by the following research questions: 1. Who is involved in leadership distribution? 2. How and why the leadership is distributed in the school? 3. What core leadership functions are most distributed? Qualitative interviews were used on leadership distribution practice in the school, which reveals formal positions leaders and expertised staff are most likely involved in leadership practice through regular leadership team meetings. Leadership is more distributed in professional development and instructional management than in school vision setting and redesigning organizations.
