Teacher turnover is a significant problem for schools with large populations of high minority, high poverty students and past research in education has attempted to pinpoint the multiple factors contributing to teacher turnover. This study, however, pulls from the field of education as well as management and human resource development to explore engagement as a predictor for turnover amongst teachers. Using an internet-based survey battery, we determine teachers level of engagement, that is teachers’ beliefs that they belong and are making a difference in schools, remains an effective predictor of turnover amongst teachers in high minority, high poverty urban schools.
