Some research has been done to understand the effect of a parent’s education level on their child’s college attendance, but little has been done to understand just how parents ignite interest in, and inspire action toward, college enrollment—especially with respect to variations in parental education levels. A relatively untouched intersection of research on parent involvement and the effect of parental education on the educational aspirations of their students is how a parent’s college generational status (first-generation to go to college, etc.) influences their child’s college-going. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand how Latina/o parents of different college generational statuses construct college-going and influence their child’s identity as a college-bound person.
