Abstract

In this study I critically review the conceptual and empirical literature on the construct of language-related knowledge for preparing teachers of English learners, focusing on analyzing the different approaches taken up by various scholars and teacher educators in their work of conceptualizing this construct. My goal for this critical review is twofold: first, to analyze the theoretical and disciplinary foundations that each approach is based upon, and the strengths and limitations of each conceptualization, and second, to put forward my suggestions on how to reconceptualize the construct of language-related knowledge for teachers of ELs in order to better inform the field’s practice of EL teacher education.
