So You Think We Can Trust: (Re)building Home–School Collaboration With Families of Children With Disability

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott, Floor: Tenth Level, O'Hare

Abstract

Research with parents of children with disabilities indicates that one of the major hindrances to collaboration with professionals is difficulty with trust. Research indicates that student outcomes are improved when there is a positive collaborative relationship between parents and educators. Williams (2007) suggested perspective–taking as an essential skill to develop trust, an essential component of collaboration. This paper presents a series of activities that were designed for use in preservice teacher education classes to enhance collaboration by focusing on building trust through understanding oneself and developing empathic responses to others.
