This paper examines the challenges of preparing effective teachers for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners in online settings, through a cross-case study of online and on-campus graduate courses that adopted the same semester-long CLD Case Study assignment. The authors describe teacher perspectives on their learning in each course, highlighting findings related to professional collaboration, learning about CLD instruction and assessment, and advocacy for English Learners. The purpose of the study is to further our understanding of how to promote effective teacher preparation for English Learners in online as well as on-campus settings.
