Can We Care for All Students? Perceptions of Care and Social Justice Among Teachers of Black and Latino Students

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Marriott, Floor: Sixth Level, Lincolnshire

Abstract

Black and Latino students experience higher rates of suspension, dropouts, and under achievement as compared to their white counterparts. It is important to consider the ways in which teacher and student relationships perpetuate or negate the abysmal educational outcomes for these student populations. Drawing on care, critical race theory and culturally responsive teaching, the purpose of this phenomenological case study is to examine teachers’ perceptions of care and social justice in a large, urban high school. The findings contribute to the care and social justice literature. Further, the study provides empirical research to discuss and address cultural similarities and differences as they pertain to teacher care.
