Embracing Complexity, Resistance, and Vulnerability in Educational Change

Abstract

This paper examines how researchers and practitioners can extend their community-based research and university-school-community partnership efforts toward change that centers family and community perspectives. We draw from our studies in two settings that partnered researchers and practitioners—one that was guided by notions of “Culturally Responsive Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports” (CRPBIS) in a context of addressing disproportionality in special education programs and the other that analyzed family and school-based relationships in a context of student and family homelessness. In this paper, we reflect upon the change processes that unfolded in the CRPBIS and homeless settings and we develop several working principles on “complexity, resistance, and vulnerability” in working for educational change.
