Acts of Transformational Resistance: Doctoral Students of Color in Schools and Colleges of Education

Abstract

Three doctoral Students of Color explore how a national sample of other doctoral Students of Color engage in transformational resistance using four domains of the doctoral experience: research, teaching, interpersonal relationships, and, service. Grounded in Critical Race Theory, this mixed methods pilot study provides a snapshot and analyses of demographic data and narratives from the sample population in relation to their acts of transformational resistance. Counterstories are shared to highlight the ways in which acts of transformational resistance serve as endeavors that should not and cannot be separated from personhood even within departments/schools of education. Implications include insights for higher education faculty members, administrators and an affirming intellectual space of shared experiences for other doctoral Students of Color.
