Defining Social Justice in Teacher Action Research

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Teacher action research with a social justice focus provides a potentially productive space for the intersection of teaching as daily practice, seeking solutions to challenges in teaching, and needing to critically examine institutional problems in schools. This research investigates teacher preparation for teaching and learning with diverse populations, with specific focus on incorporating social justice aims in a required action research project. The research involves analyzing curricular approaches and actual teacher action research projects, for evidence of social justice learning. Assessment data linked to learning outcomes indicates that teachers need more foundational work in defining social justice in education, and need strategies to develop a sense of agency and forge allies for effective social justice work in their own settings.
