This paper describes a cross-national research project over five years that focused on understanding the role of parents collaborating with teachers to develop a responsive, critically negotiated curriculum that brought together low income families, immigrants and refugees, to fight for equity and educational opportunities in their communities. The two case studies described in this paper come from Camarillo (California) and Porto Alegre (Brazil). In these two different socio-political contexts, the researchers studied and found examples of how parents can take responsibility towards the education of their children and how they can help create an educational environment that promotes meaningful learning and critical capacity.
