Doing Reading Research With Young Students Rather Than on Them: New Methods to Consider

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Gold Level, Grand CD

Abstract

Moving towards increased educational justice means moving towards increasing young children’s involvement in reading research. This paper outlines how young students can become partners (or “co-investigators”) with adult researchers during classroom research and observation. Specifically, this paper describes research materials for first graders readers which allow them to engage in the research process and have more of a voice in the data that is being collected about them. In this paper, I share a method I have developed that focuses on how to: 1) Do research with young children and engage them as participants rather than just do research on them as subjects; 2) conceive of what research materials for young children might look like now and in the next decade.
