This project assumed that praxis focused on the disruption of ideology, can move graduate students forward in their understandings of structural racism and the importance of social justice. Using the discourse products of five students in one online classroom, we detail how hegemonic ideologies were exposed and ideological shifts triggered through reflection and ideological critique. Using a critical hermeneutic approach, we sampled six journal entries and midterm and final reflection papers. By analyzing the discourse of these students their ideologies were exposed and challenged, eliciting deeper reflection and personal critique. More importantly, the students’ self-critique prompted an awareness of the need for social justice in education and counseling paved the way for replacing hegemonic ideologies with counter hegemonic ones.
