A Promotora Model for Effective Community Building: A New Approach to Education Praxis

Abstract

This qualitative case study examines the discursive and pedagogical practices of immigrant
Latinas in Los Angeles who in their roles as Promotoras teach parents and community members about
LGBT issues. Through observations and a microgenetic analysis of the learning taking place within the
Promotoras teaching and discursive practices, I plan to demonstrate how this program is an effective tool in creating a strong base of support for LGBT youth in predominately Latina/o schools and communities that is mediated by the participants own background and experiences as Latina/o immigrants.
