In a public community youth media organization in New York City, young people are educated in the critical consumption of media and in the production of their own video media texts. The discourse surrounding this production and consumption of non-commercial public media is positioned by staff and youth participants alike as a tool for “social justice.” A commonly used but often undertheorized concept in education (North, 2006) and the youth media field specifically, this ethnographic study examines the discourse and practice of “social justice work” by youth participants and staff members to reveal the different meanings inherent in this tacit concept.
