Using Direct Instruction to Maximize the Learning Potential of Digital Games

Sun, April 19, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Digital game based learning is at a crossroads. While many agree that games are engaging and motivating, the lack of empirical studies supporting learning gains resulting directly from gameplay is troubling. One contributing factor to this issue could be the fact that while games are excellent at providing rich, immersive learning experiences, they are not good at explain concepts, skills, and procedures. It might be that games are a poor substitute for direct instruction. This study investigates the effect direct instruction has on the learning potential of games by investigating how best to implement games within a traditional classroom in order to maximizing learning gains.
