This study involves multi-sited ethnographic research of the process of citizenship-making among immigrant Latina young women living in a diverse periphery working-class neighborhood of Madrid (Spain) and attending a high school. This high school has a democratic education project founded on respect for human rights, participation, inclusive education, education for change, and empowerment. This presentation documents the extent to which school citizenship discourses participate, and on what terms, in the formation of young women’s identities and political agency. In this work, I argue that the process of citizenship-making is, in fact, a process in which young women not only learn to become citizens but also particular kinds of gendered civic subjects.
