The Unintended Consequences of the Federal and State Policy on Social Studies

Sun, April 19, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott, Floor: Fifth Level, Scottsdale

Abstract

When discussing social studies and any form of large-scale assessment, two types of literature are generally formed: narrowing of curriculum and reduction of instruction time especially in elementary education. The NAEP assessment allows researchers to examine the unintended consequences of the modern accountability system by examining state policy towards social studies. This study examines the 2010 NAEP assessment results to determine whether an accountability of social studies is evident in student achievement. This study will inform the policymakers about whether social studies benefits from remaining outside the assessment and accountability system in the current society.
