Pioneering University Programs at the Intersections of the Arts and STEM

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Gold Level, New Orleans

Abstract

Establishing a new program within a large educational institution is a formidable feat and presenting a new interdisciplinary program presents another layer of challenges. With the shift towards bridging the arts and sciences, and more specifically the movement to integrate the arts with STEM education, universities are establishing areas of study that marry these disciplines.
This collective case study presents the leadership narratives of two university programs that integrate an arts and STEM discipline. Guiding this analysis of educational leaders is Bolman and Deal’s four frames of organizational leadership. Through questioning the multiple frames of leadership a portrait of two contrasting journeys is painted despite the coincidental commonality of female leadership at both sites.
