These Students Ain't Loyal: Perpetuating the Cultural Stereotype of "At-Riskness" and Dropping Out in an Urban School

Abstract

Using a multiple case study of sixteen Black and Hispanic urban youth, I examine the intersectionality of race and gender in shaping their pursuit of a diploma. This included analyzing student’s perceptions of racial microaggressions used by educators, and how youth were spotlighted in the classroom. As students of color returned after dropping out, they may face stereotype threat and negative societal conceptualizations of their racial group. This paper examines the counterstories of urban students of color that returned after dropping out, and their narratives on race and gender codes in school.
