How a Student Combat Veteran With Posttraumatic Stress Conceptualizes Experiences of Stress in Academic Environments

Sun, April 19, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Here I start from a humanistic perspective in approaching persons with posttraumatic stress (PTS). Through a study investigating the subjective experiences of a combat veteran at a four-year university, I ask: What does a combat veteran with PTS perceive as stress, and, perceive as his responses to stress while navigating experience through his post-secondary academic environment? This study is in response to a dearth of qualitative literature regarding the subjective experiences of persons with PTS and serves also as a platform for examining PTS from a functionally adaptive perspective.
