Education Students' Inventories of Personal Language Use: Potentialities and Restrictions in Linguistic Repertoires

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Teacher education has been slow to include linguistic diversity in preparing teachers for a diverse student population. Greater attention is needed to deepen teachers’ knowledge of language diversity to keep pace with what we need to know about students and their language uses that can be tapped and developed in academic learning and contexts beyond school. Drawing upon a database of language inventories completed by 262 undergraduate education students, many of them prospective teachers, this study examines these students’ diverse uses of language(s), using a pedagogical activity that promotes self-reflexive inquiry into language diversity.
