Measuring Behavioral Engagement: Is There a More Economical Way?

Abstract

This paper presents the preliminary results of a pilot test associated with a new process and instrument to measure students’ behavioral engagement. The goal of the instrument is to provide a more economical method of obtaining student engagement measures that is accessible to school personnel without straining resources. Preliminary results of a pilot test with over 18,000 classroom observations reveal the instrument has the potential to provide schools with insights that will inform instructional strategies. A multilevel mixed effects models reveal engagement levels vary within grade level and schools are impacted by depth of knowledge of the class content.
