Biracial and Multiracial Student Achievement Measurements in Higher Education: A Social Justice Imperative

Sun, April 19, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre First Level, Zurich C

Abstract

This research explores three premises regarding higher education experiences for biracial and multiracial college students and the implications for college campuses. First, there is a critical imperative to determine student achievement outcomes among multiracial college students. Are these students experiencing achievement gaps at the same rate as monoracial students of color? Second, data collection on race, especially for multiracial students can be ambiguous due to the fluid nature and specific situations that influence identity and racial category/ies selected. Therefore, how is academic performance accurately monitored? Last, is there a space for dialogues about multiracial identity, for students and administrators? This research informs all college departments about the needs of multiracial students and practices to create an equitable educational environment.
