Abstract

This paper engages in an analysis of four girls’ surreptitious use of a fashion themed casual massively multiplayer online game (MMOG), Movie Star Planet, while in a language arts classroom. Using multimodal data from the 6th grade, largely Mexican-American class, multiple layers of semiotic exchange that make up the girls’ classroom lives are analyzed, finding the girls are able to engage in meaningful literacy and identity work through rich interaction beyond the gaze of the teacher that builds on the classroom curriculum.
