In this study, we use the frameworks of both Buchmann et al. (2010) as well as Byun & Park (2012) to further expand both our understanding of how private tutoring is a form of parental involvement and educational stratification. We include student participation in both free tutoring and other tutoring to understand if family background plays a factor in a student taking free tutoring or paying for other tutoring. Drawing from data collected from the NHES (2007), we conducted logistic regression to analyze the effects of race, household income and parent education background on these two kinds of tutoring. Our main research question is: Do family background (race, household income, and parent’s educational background) influence children attending free or other tutoring?
