Black Women's Faculty Voices in New Mexico: Invisible Assets Silent No More

Abstract

This session will present findings from a research study done to examine and understand the experiences of Black women faculty as higher education institutions in New Mexico. Womanism and Critical Race Theory were used as the theoretical basis for this study and the story of Hagar provided the framework for analysis in understanding participant experiences. The paper will present information on the study, study participants and analysis of lifetime experiences. The findings include Black women faculty dealing with microaggressions, normalization of White Supremacy in higher education, and stereotype threat in their work as college faculty members.
