As the deadline for full-scale Common Core implementation and Common Core-aligned testing approaches, schools and districts face increasing pressure to build the expertise and capacity necessary to meet the heightened expectations of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).With more than 1,700 schools to prepare, the NYC DOE has assumed that any sustainable model of capacity-building will need to capitalize on within-school expertise and leadership rather than relying solely on external professional development. However, there are factors that may facilitate or impede the collaborative learning of the CCSS throughout schools.
This qualitative study examines the ways that collaborative learning of the CCSS can happen among teachers within 8 schools throughout the NYC district.
