Abstract

This study utilizes Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) as both a pedagogical tool and research methodology to explore the possibilities and constraints of employing YPAR in formal schooling structures and for the purposes of increasing youth community engagement. The researchers designed and facilitated a five-week Critical Research Camp with 15 Latino/a youth within a high school located in the Fruitvale area of Oakland and utilize interviews, participant-observation, and analysis of student work to explore how students of color in marginalized communities come to conceptualize community, democracy and their role as “citizens.”
