Using iPads to Support Children's Learning of Mathematics

Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

The effectiveness of iPads with mathematics gaming applications on preschool children’s learning is examined using a quasi-experimental pre-and-posttest intervention design. Fifty children distributed across four classrooms participated in the study. Two classrooms served as intervention group where children were provided iPads containing developmentally appropriate educational games focusing on mathematics. Data were collected by means of observational notes, video-recording and the “Test of Early Mathematics Ability-3 (TEMA-3)" developed by Ginsburg and Baroody (2003). The results revealed that children in the intervention group made significant gains in their mathematical concepts and skills.
