The thoughtful, systematic use of data has been offered as a school reform strategy capable of increasing student achievement and equity between groups. While data-driven reform initiatives have been undertaken in a variety of school types and settings, results have often failed to materialize for historically underserved students. This may be because data-driven instruction (DDI) is a dynamic, complex system with a number of variables that must be accounted for by school and district leaders in their particular contexts. To help leaders more strategically approach data-based reforms, this study deconstructed DDI into a set of 51 variables, then tested them using stepwise multiple regression to identify the variables perceived to best predict urban student achievement.
