This qualitative study examines first-year college students’ perspectives on their development as writers. Open-ended survey questions and interviews with students aim to better understand how first-year college students from different high schools across the country and the world perceive the supportive, neutral, and destructive factors that influence their development as writers. Study results reveal common patterns of support and lack thereof reported by students across a variety of high schools in the United States and across other countries. Findings from this study have implications for the teaching of writing using student-centered approaches at both the secondary and postsecondary levels in order to adequately support first-year college students as they face the complexities of college writing.
