A Proposed Lightweight Assessment Item Ontology and Implications of the Semantic Web in Education

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This research proposes a lightweight assessment item ontology for use in the context of the Semantic Web and highlights the affordances of open standards and portable formats for education. The vocabulary and taxonomy include traditional assessment item types as well as alternative and innovative assessment items. The ontology includes terms to fully specify item stem and option structure for a static assessment. Example assessments are included as a vignette to demonstrate use of the ontology and methods for encoding rich content. The ontology is presented along with mappings to terms in existing published work and notes from the literature review also in a semantic format. Limitations and areas for future work are also discussed.
