Abstract: Using a post-structural frame this paper illustrates how two teachers facilitated discussion around children’s books that focused on gender expectations in a third and fourth grade bilingual classrooms. The teachers created pedagogical spaces where critical encounters took place, disrupting the traditional patterns of talk and creating emancipatory possibilities for girls and boys. Additionally the girls and boys were able to challenge notions of emphasized feminity and hegemonic masculinity. Through social practice the teachers encouraged dialogue with the text and guided their students toward praxis and to take action, making them aware of their agency.
