The concept of environmental justice brings equity issues to the forefront of environmental sustainability. In the long-term, education for sustainability demands that environmental education (EE) become education for environmental justice (EJE). This study is an effort to elaborate the contours of the discourse around EJ in the EE literature. The fundamental question is: How is the environmental education academic literature talking about educating for environmental justice? The findings support conclusions that EJ is sometimes included in the EE discourse. However, for the most part, environmental educators in general and EE researchers in particular have only a weak attention to issues of environmental inequity and that both theoretical and practical sophistication can be improved.
