This session shares results from a study that observed a tension that exists in some bilingual classrooms between mathematics teaching and English language acquisition. What do three third grade bilingual teachers notice about engaging English Language Learners in problem solving? Findings indicate the dilemmas that these teachers faced as they grappled with quality mathematics teaching in noticing important features of children’s mathematical thinking and language acquisition.
