Abstract

Using data from the 2005 NAEP High School Transcript Study, this study uses discrete-time Markov modeling techniques to build transition matrices addressing: (1) Are students taking challenging mathematics course sequences? (2) To what extent are students taking the math courses available to them? (3) Is mathematics course availability limiting students from taking higher level mathematics courses? and (4) Does previous mathematics course performance affect mathematics course selections?
