Unpacking Preservice Teachers' Expectations to Eventually Leave Teaching

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Teacher attrition poses a real problem for high needs schools, so it seems ironic to seek out and train those individuals most likely to leave because they desire to do more. A rarely explored component of this problem is how desire forms—how the sense of yearning takes hold, or at least fails to disappear, during a teacher’s training. In this study I draw on a conception of desire to unpack pre-service teachers' indications that they do not see themselves teaching for very long.
