Social Disparities in Sixth-Grade Students' Information and Communications Technology Literacy and Computer-Specific Motivations: A Questionnaire Considering Family Process Features

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Studies found that social disparities in adults’ ICT literacy depend on their family background. However, there is little research reporting relationships between children’s social background and computer-specific motivation as well as ICT literacy. In order to empirically investigate this relationship focusing on the mediating role of parental involvement we developed a questionnaire. It is expected that the relationships are mediated by family process variables such as parental support and parental control of children’s computer and internet use. To measure family process features the developed questionnaire was tested in a sample of N = 60 sixth grade students and their parents. The expected results showed satisfying psychometric properties of the developed scales. The scales showed good to excellent mean item difficulties.
