High School Student Interest and Learning of Climate Change Science via Local, Place-Based Narrative Games

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Second Level, Superior A

Abstract

The Climate Change Narrative Game Education (CHANGE) project is developing an innovative prototype curriculum on Global Climate Change (GCC) science. GCC is a complex topic involving numerous factors and uncertainties making teaching this extremely important topic very difficult. The prototype employs a place-based futuristic gaming that uses: scientifically realistic narrative stories; local, place-based approach; simulations and games based on scientific data. Two pilot studies were conducted with 159 students in three schools. The results show that this innovative model had positive impacts on: helping high school students learn complex climate change science; engage in scientific and engineering practices, and increase interest in science and engineering.
