Recent scholars encourage the use of intrusive academic advising strategies—that is, a proactive approach that anticipates student needs and connects them to resources and support early on before a problem arises. Yet we know relatively less about intrusive advising and its impact on the success of students of color. This study sought to fill this gap in the literature by examining the influence of intrusive advising on Black male collegians’ college knowledge, academic self-efficacy, and persistence toward degree completion. Preliminary results suggest that intrusive advising strategies positively influence Black males’ success in college, over and beyond background traits, prior achievement, and passive advising strategies. Implications and recommendations for research, practice, and policy are also shared.
