A School District–University Partnership: Strengthening Leadership Preparation While Reenergizing the Connection Between Theory and Practice

Abstract

This presentation will focus on the formation of a collaborative partnership between an urban/suburban school district and an urban historically Black university in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. The doctoral degree granting program focused on preparing 28 school principals and central office supervisors by strengthening their conceptual understanding of leadership while they were serving in leadership roles in the district. University faculty were also required to rethink the delivery of instruction to accommodate the field-based leadership preparation program. The presentation will focus on the development of the partnership, collaboration in developing the curriculum, negotiation points and use of social justice themes across the program strands. Outcomes will be shared on the impact of the partnership within the school district as well as on the university’s delivery of curriculum and instruction.
