The panel looks within and across four cities (Philadelphia; Oakland, CA; Camden, NJ; Newark, NJ) where new forms of coalitions are challenging the corporatization agenda in education. We will examine how these new coalitions have formed, what they look like, their strategies, and how they negotiate across organizational and constituent boundaries. Second, we will examine how traditional organizations (e.g. unions) deal with rapidly changing environments. What opportunities and challenges do these organizations and coalitions face, what kinds of new possibilities do and might they create, and what kinds of capacities are they developing? Based on these case studies, we will draw lessons about effective organizing to preserve and strengthen public education in the U.S.
